Andela Secures $100M Series D to Build Distributed Engineering Teams and Power the Future of Work

Andela, the company building distributed engineering teams with Africa’s top software developers, today announced the completion of a $100M Series D funding. The round was led by Generation Investment Management with participation from existing investors including Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, GV, Spark Capital, and CRE Venture Capital. The most recent financing brings Andela’s total venture funding to $180M.

Andela was founded in 2014 to connect Africa’s engineering talent with the demand for software developers worldwide. In four years, Andela has assessed more than one hundred thousand applicants, hired one thousand software developers, and integrated them into hundreds of companies, such as Safaricom, Percolate, and InVision.

With the Series D funding, Andela will accelerate the development of its technology platform to identify, develop and match talent at scale. By doing so, Andela will provide its customers with the data they need to understand developer performance and better manage distributed teams. The company will also expand its presence across Africa to meet the global demand for high-quality engineering talent.

“It’s increasingly clear that the future of work will be distributed, in part due to the severe shortage of engineering talent,” says Jeremy Johnson, co-founder and CEO of Andela. “Given our access to incredible talent across Africa, as well as what we’ve learned from scaling hundreds of engineering teams around the world, Andela is able to provide the talent and the technology to power high-performing teams and help companies adopt the distributed model faster.”

“Andela has been a critical player in Nigeria’s technology revolution,” says Omowale David-Ashiru, Country Director at Andela. “Due to our unwavering commitment to our mission throughout the last four years, Andela has grown into a thriving platform for hundreds of technologists in Nigeria. With this investment, Andela will accelerate the development of Africa’s best tech talent in Nigeria and beyond.”

“Generation’s investment in Andela resulted from our deep research into the future of work. We believe Andela is a transformational model to develop software engineers and deploy them at scale into the future enterprise,” says Lilly Wollman, Co-Head of Growth Equity at Generation Investment Management. “The global demand for software engineers far exceeds supply, and that gap is projected to widen. Andela’s leading technology enables firms to effectively build and manage distributed engineering teams. We are great admirers of the outstanding team, mission and culture Andela has built across two continents and five countries.” With tech campuses in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, Andela has been recognized as “The Best Place to Work in Africa.” In 2018, The Wall Street Journal named Andela as one of the twenty-five technology company to watch, and the year prior, Fast Company ranked Andela as the most innovative company in Africa. In 2019, Andela is projected to double in size, hiring another one thousand software developers and investing heavily in data, engineering, and product development.

Paypal join the payment platform in Nigeria

Paypal, the old payment platform that gives consumer enough access to own there privacy, security and for as many living in Nigeria that has been so skeptical to use there credit card online due to fraudulent activities that can affect their finances and credit history can now breath a fresh air as to the fact that PayPal, the financial technology company has now made their presence available in Nigeria, the event that takes place at the open living lab in  the neighborhood of Yaba that house the domain where almost all the developer in Lagos and in Nigeria gather under one roof in other to churn out community relevant technology solutions, the Co-Creation Hub located at 294, Herbert Macaulay way, Sabo, Yaba. In other to give rooms for more customer to get connected and also to improve and expand  their customer base and also encourage the habit of going online for shopping and making life easy.

Before now PayPal was of the opinion that they are not ready for Nigeria market and not that alone but also Africa as a whole, but I personally say to myself that that was in the time past, several question were then pointed out as to and from the last experience of some people that have wanted to use the platform and some that were locked out due to breaking one policy or another and even some was due to IP address of the system been used as against the registered IP that is attached to the account at the point of registering the account. Though this put so much question in the airways that require attention. The platform go further to establish the fact that individuals hardly leave home without this three things car keys, wallet and mobile phone which serves as the common point of meeting for both online and offline, that is instead of going about with raw cash or better still ATM or credit card but with the flexibility of Mobile phones these days, one hardly go about this three in a way which has easily bridge the gap between the online and offline of the individuals business life.

But the smell of the good omen coming to town now is that, PayPal has come to stay and need to  understanding the Nigeria financial ecosystem with  technology and even the African business environment in other to know where and how to sync all other product into the market or better still dominating the existing payment platform which might already understand the consumer behaviour and just subsume the platform.

We therefore keep our finger crossed as to what is in pipeline for Nigeria and the African market, so the challenge goes to tech solution providers to step up the game and build a solution that can transcend beyond this Nigeria and scale through the African continent first due to sensitive and fragile financial setup in Nigeria and Africa thereafter we can then look into studying how we can infuse and integrate into the developed world financial system or say from experience churn out another standard solution to compete with existing one and as well makes life easy for all.

As of the moment, tech developers that believe in not reinventing the wheel were eagerly awaiting the release of API for integrating into the existing solution that they had running already. At the launch and briefing of the available solution and the stages currently on ground for the merchant and individuals were in attendance some key players in the technology Industries and other stakeholder with developers wanting to dive straight into the available solution even at the beta stage.
Share with us your experience of the platform presence in Nigeria and what you think about their presence compare to what you have experience in the past?

The iHq project, transformation loading…

The iHq project is a project and vision of the open living lab of the Co-creation Hub (aka CcHub), with the vision from the duos that might have seen it ahead (Bosun Tijani and Femi Longe) and the need to have a replica of silicon valley, even if not in anyway closer but totally change the way it is and get improve overtime and also be the very first in Nigeria if not in Africa.
So, the research they have carry out before this implementation stage shows that for changes and improvement to happen the implementation of the project matter most and it is going to be of good benefit to the citizens at the grassroots level, communities, state, economy and possibly the country at large. Also, a very good beginning with many  innovative solution to the common man and not neglecting people at the grassroots level with the inclusion of the students from low-income earners to the governments school around in other to bring them at par with what is obtainable in the developed world.

Research shows that for changes to be effect and feel, there is need for stable power, access to good road, and in terms of education, general overhauling of the education syllabus might be a thorn in the neck and with the believe that if the available syllabus is judiciously utilise and channel into doing rather than theoretical essay and cramming with the view to gain a certificate at the end of the day might not get Nigeria anywhere than producing unemployable graduates as it is clear that their are jobs out there but unemployable graduates are been produce year-in year-out and this gives rooms to foreigners to coming in and rake the jobs available for the citizens.
Therefore, CcHub as fondly called come up with this initiative that if only the businesses within their vicinity could get access to internet and without forgetting the governments parastatals and educational institutions which is  not limited to tertiary education but also goes down to the grassroots level, I mean to the primary and secondary school in that axis and part of the Lagos state environs.
At the just concluded meeting with the team of solveforX team from the GoogleX arm of Google with the Vice-President of the GoogleX in attendance, Megan Smith, the Google Country Manager Juliet Ehimuan and her Nigeria team to champion the event. Femi Longe give a breakdown of what the project is all about how it all started, how they schedule meetings with stakeholders concerned, how Lagos State governor the person of Babatunde Raji Fashola has been of tremendous help to the project by granting right of way for the implementation of the project. The project is going to see all the institutions within that environs comes alive to bring the best in education with the support of good and quality internet facility to the institutions and also to the secondary and primary schools with the plan to do a train-the-trainer in other to have a full fledged and up-to-date technology and computer education that can project the graduates for a better employment and labour market injection and also ensure a technology solution that enhance green environment with views to also tackle some basic problem been faced day to day like managing traffic with good planning of packing space without contributing to the traffic been experienced in that environment.
The project also had in plan, room for as many people that might which to work from home and get their workdone as fast as possible and timely with access to good and quality internet services. He further enumerate the challenges been faced and the current challenges been proper utilization of this project, after which there is a Question and Answer segment that helps in outsourcing ideas on solution to enhance smooth implementation and adequate use of the project without abusing it and getting it across to the right people which the project is targets at.

Technology changes in the way we do business

The beginning: How it all started
For Nigeria and some other developing countries. Buying and selling  is as old as humanity in itself.
It all start from trade by barter as we are much used to and with one to one buying and selling but overtime and the advent of technology has brought a drastic change to the way we transact and change business look.
Worst beginning , technology the game changer.
Nigeria as a case study wanting to join the league of countries that carry out transaction online but getting onboard in the negative way which has brought a shameful look and dent to the image of the country, that Nigerians wherever they travelled to get this isolated or convict look and treatment. To some they  believe its a leadership thing while to some youth that are conversant  and follow trend and development agreed that its a bad orientation or improper enlightenment about internet attitude and behaviour with an online transaction thereby turn every youth as of that era to fraudster (I mean like 72% of the youth population) are tagged yahoo-yahoo boys and from that point henceforth Nigeria get delisted from countries that can make transaction online.
But the change and findings  had shows that Africa is the next place for development from trade and also green land for economical development and center of attraction for the global environment, this been known to people of the elite and business analyst that has foresight of the future. Since then, Elite and the business mogul put together their  resources in other to be part of this global village and business arena then be relevant, several studies both within and outside has been put together to regain the dented image of the country and even make the environment and atmosphere available and conducive for the time to come, therefore fixing the integrity issues within before the infusion of the foreigners and to cartered for, this then the likes of Konga, Jumia, Huntella, Kaymu and to mentioned a few.and the likes come onboard to test out different business models ,taking  risk with facts figure and even cash and as well correcting the integrity issues with the believe that if we are able  to solve the integrity issues within then we will be able to convince the foreigner and enabled or say activate online transaction and imbibing the culture in this part of the world.
Therefore bringing this into reality, to this environment and this part of the world, we need to try educate the general masses and go down to the grassroot and even the youth needs a massive re-orientation with regards to the use of internet and re-channel there thinking to the positive aspect and they can be the next change. The government of the country needs to also realise the proper benefit and how this can be of great use to the country at large, so that license cannot just be issued but proper rule and regulation with reliable terms and conditions with an elite within that profession who will know what and what it takes to consider before putting together terms and condition, that will not give room to abusive use, and the merchandise with the license will not just be giving pocket-tearing tariff with unreliable network, and to proper enhance the growth and improve the business aspect of the economy of the country to show reliability and give a good transition with good prospect for businesses and investors.
The few expose people in the terrain now are really strategizing on how to impact the economy at large positively and position it for an international standard.
Kindly tell us your internet experience and how it has positively affect you or your business one way or the other, do not hesitate to highlight the bad effective also.
Till the next column enjoy the rich opportunity of the internet and remain security conscious.

This Drop-out Employee Was Fired By His Employer For His Ideas And Launched His Own Million Dollar Startup with them

Jobless, he quit law school. “I’m a law-school dropout and a philosophy major. I’m like the most unemployable person in the world,” he laughs.

No one personifies the term ‘Living well is the best revenge’, better than Abtin Buergari, founder and CEO of Washington, D.C., startup, Modus eDiscovery.

 Abtin Buergari

This is the fantastic rags-to-riches story of a man who grew up in poverty and was working himself through law school until his ideas for doing his job better got him fired — and sued — by his employer.

So he took those ideas and started his own company, dropping out of college and living on credit cards.

Five years later, the company was generating $18 million in sales and landed $10 million in venture investment. It is now six years later, and he’s commanding a 200-employee workforce with 12 offices.

Still, he describes the journey as “a very hard six years. Grueling. Going through moments of growth and through things that have taken me as far down and as far up as I could go,” he says.

Here’s how it all happened, he tells us:

Buergari was working as a paralegal while attending law school when he was recruited by a company that does what’s known as “electronic discovery” or “eDiscovery.” That’s the process of digging through emails, instant messages and other online documents to find information that can be used in litigation.

He was working on a Hurricane Katrina lawsuit for a customer. (Katrina sparked an unprecedented series of lawsuits aimed at insurance companies and the federal government.) The customer, an attorney, requested Buergari uncover documents as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible. Buergari had some ideas for using technology to sift through documents faster and cheaper and asked his bosses if he could try those ideas.

They shushed him.

That’s because eDiscovery is expensive for lawyers and lucrative for those supplying the document review services. The average legal department spends about $3 million per case for the discovery portion, law blog ABA Journal reports. They didn’t want their eDiscovery process to become faster and cheaper, Buergari says.

Buergari told them he could quit his job and become a consultant for his employer and tried to get them to let him try his ideas that way.

Bad move.

“I was not only fired, I was also sued,” he said. His employer accused him of trying to steal their clients and their trade secrets.

Jobless, he quit law school. “I’m a law-school dropout and a philosophy major. I’m like the most unemployable person in the world,” he laughs.

So he did the only thing he could think of to do: launched his own eDiscovery company.

Good move.

When one of his customers paid him a $1,250 retainer for his eDiscovery work, he knew he made the right choice.

“I still have the check. I never cashed it,” he says. Then the checks grew from $1,000 to $10,000 and $100,000. “We’ve got a couple of checks in the $1-million range, too” he says.

He created his own eDiscovery software and cloud-computing service where companies can store documents that need to be reviewed, a service he calls “hosted review.”

Today, Modus has processed terabytes of data for some of the world’s largest corporations and law firms.

Last year, Modus was named on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies with $18 million in sales, up from $1.5 million the year before. He raised $10 million in venture funds that year, too.

All of this happened while being sued by his former employer, he says, which was confirmed by court documents.

But the tough times were a blessing in disguise, he says.

“When everything is hard … you just have to stay strong. That’s when you know you can be a leader that drives a company forward,” he says.

The best part of his success is watching others succeed with him.

Bye to an old friend, but do I need to buy another Computer or another Operating System

About a week ago, I bid a farewell to an old friend (I mean the version of Microsoft Operating System that I ran on my personal computer), but not really final bye-bye like that, but still, am a frequent user of my Personal Computer and always want to be up to date with everything that has to do with my computers and flow with the new development in the IT world, and you are bound to ask me that if that is the case, then why do I have to wait this long for my Old friend to be obsolete and sent away before I take this step.

But am glad to tell you that for me, I can still make do with its absence but considering all other people that are benefitting from the old friend are so much enormous that I cannot afford to but think in-depth if and only if they can find a way out of this so locked-to relationship between them and this my old friend in question.

Business Centres are been saved by this my old friend simply because he is rugged or simply put his rugged nature and to make the case more worse, Banks also, I mean Bank and not just mushroom banks o (Sorry, no offense, even, in this age, the banks that I can call mushroom, the microfinance banks too are already on the run leaving my Old friend behind), but some of the giant banks are still running on the support of my old friend, well not too bad but being loyal to my old is like been a dinosaur and not ready to change, so there computers are still running Windows XP, like that is not enough, which is the main reason why am highly concern and leaving the scene with my heart more concern,

This later drop into my mind and am bound to ask myself, my Window XP, the Old friend indeed is seriously gonna be missed and leaving a path because so many of the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) that I have come across are all running Windows XP, which makes it clear to me that, if the machines are faulty or got some issues and needs to be threated and attends to, then the support required to attend to such issues is not available, somebody wake me up from my slumber because the support that keeps my Old friends running is cut-off and is no more available, how then can I make solution to the issues from the ATM, to the giant banks in my home country which I believe that some other countries and not only banks are still running Windows XP, businesses and even some multinational are still running Windows XP, does that mean, they needs more security in there management, or consciously make use of their computer in other to avoid what can warrant the needs of support.

Aside, the use of this version of Operating System, the configuration of the hardware that make up the XP is somehow lower to that of other version of Windows that comes after XP, but then for a small merchant that cares about business and don’t want to be caught unaware, all I believe you need is back your works, migrate to the new version of Windows either Windows 7, although I will have suggest windows Vista but I discover that Vista does not stay long before the birth of Windows 7 and why not switch straight to Windows 8, but first thing first consider system specification or requirement needed to be met before running such version of Operating system and also check out for drivers supports that will be compatible with the hardware that comes with the System in question

My concern now is this, ATM that are currently using the version of this Operating System or say, that are running on Window XP, what will be the future of ATM’s because I discovered that ATM runs on Windows XP, and what if the OS is infected or attacked with the current situation of no support and other things considered? Is this going to be a loopholes for hackers? And remember security is very crucial and paramount and in this era of Heartbleed…

This questions lingers on in my mind with much security concerned.

Adieu my Old Friend, Good Bye Window XP…

5 Things Every Small Business Needs to Excel

It’s the American dream to own your own company and be your own boss. Many people get tired of working for someone else and hope to go out on their own. Although it’s possible to be successful as a small business, it is sometimes difficult and there is no assurance of profit and success. In order to be victorious in the cut-throat business world, companies need these five important things:

Managed Hosting Solution

A small business’ data is one of the most valuable assets they have. Unfortunately, there is not enough time in the day for owners to deal with the technical aspects of their business and, as a result, they need to reach out to data center hosting companies for help.

Using an outside vendor for these services allows small business owners to do what they do best, run their company. Too often, small businesses take it upon themselves to handle information technology and it ends in disaster. Don’t make the mistake of putting your precious data on the line! As your company grows, you may be able to afford a full-time IT technician to keep your hosting in house but, for now, it’s best to leave the job to someone else.

Although this may seem like a given, many small business owners don’t put enough focus on money management. Starting a business requires lots of funding and incurs many hidden costs. Know what your options are in terms of loans and lines of credit so you are always prepared.

Reliable Employees

You are probably not going to be able to run your business on your own. As a result of this, you need to make sure you are hiring the best people for the jobs you need to fill. You cannot be successful without having a strong team behind you, so take the time you need to select the best, most qualified people to work with you.

Physical Necessities

In order for any business to operate successfully, owners need to know which tools and equipment are necessary. The list is specific to each small business, but it may include things like telephones, computers, furniture, and marketing materials. Without these things, your small business cannot operate.

Support Team

Starting and running a small business is going to be one of the most stressful things you do in life. To be able to remain optimistic and realistic, it’s important to make sure that you have smart, rational people you can lean on and talk to. Without personal cheerleaders (as well as thinkers), the journey may seem impossible at times.

To be successful, it’s important to go into business with a strong plan. Be sure to address things like what your managed hosting solution for your data will be. It’s also crucial to have the funds and the best people to help you in all your endeavours.

What is your take on innovation? The i-HQ project

Playing around with new concepts particularly involving the collective seems to one very outstanding quality in these times of improved technology.
Imagine having to build an innovation neighbourhood just so that the processes of innovation and solution mining are greatly enhanced. These are some of the benefits of a having a project such as the i-HQ. As it unfolds, the main idea behind the project seems to be a unified attempt to accelerate the growth of technology innovation and entrepreneurship.
This would come about hopefully by removing some very unnecessary but prevailing obstacles – such as a lack of broadband internet facilities fast enough to enhance seamless workflow, power issues, traffic jam, and lack of a coherent and concentrated ecosystem where people could co-exist, collaborate and share ideas.
